The Hoot

Project Overview

Southern Connecticut State University’s The Hoot — Spring 2026 is a seasonal graduate newsletter created by the School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS) that celebrates the achievements, experiences, and sense of community within its graduate programs. Designed by student editorial designer Dayana Cruz Torres, the publication highlights academic excellence, leadership, and student resilience in a warm and professional tone.

The newsletter features recognition of outstanding students and faculty through awards honoring leadership, research, mentorship, and program contributions. It also covers the first CSCU Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, where graduate students presented their research in a concise and engaging format for a general audience.

In addition, the publication emphasizes student support initiatives such as the Graduate Student Association, expanded COMPASS childcare services, and the U-Pass transit benefit. Campus events, including the Research and Creativity Conference and the Phi Kappa Phi honor society induction, further showcase graduate involvement and achievement. Overall, the newsletter reflects a supportive and community-centered graduate experience.
